"I AM BEATY

"STRONG. INDEPENDENT. CHANGING MY WORLD FOR GOOD.

"I was one of the first kids to join MADaboutART back in 2002 and I've been part of the MAD family ever since. I completed the MAD curriculum and graduated to become MAD's first ‘Youth Ambassador’.

"Now I have two children of my own and I run MAD’s after-school programme helping children in the township find their brighter future just like I did".

"IT WASN'T ALWAYS THAT WAY.

"Like many girls growing up in South Africa’s townships I was raped by older men I knew and trusted. Three men. One was my uncle. They made me HIV-positive. Afterwards I lived in fear of men, I was ashamed and blamed myself. Killing myself seemed the only escape.

"Then I joined MADaboutART. Every day after school I worked on my ‘Hero Book’: a true story in which I, Beaty, confront my ‘shame suicide monster’ and overcome my fear of men. Being at MAD helped me learn about myself, confront the demons in my life and grow up strong. I shared my story to support other girls. Being open about my HIV, I called out discrimination wherever I saw it.

"I was born and grew up in Knysna, South Africa, close to MADaboutART. I love my community and I want a brighter future all kids. I help kids at MAD to grow stronger and begin to feel good about themselves like I did. They are the future and together we are making a difference."
